People have many approaches to God, many reasons for believing, many reasons for not believing. I was raised Methodist, drifted away in college, and a few years later encountered the Baha'i Faith. A year later, I became a Baha'i and have remained so for 37 years.

For me, it was never about comfort, although certainly there are times when I derive comfort from my faith. Rather, I heard the Voice of God in the Baha'i Holy Writings, the same Voice I hear in the Gospels. This isn't something I can easily explain, nor is it something I expect others to necessarily experience. We're all a bit different. But the core of all religion is the mystical feeling that unites us with our Creator. Those who have said it's all indoctrination or ignorance simply don't understand. (I don't fault them for not understanding; I'm just stating the fact.)

Regarding allegory in Scripture, of course there is allegory, but there is nothing "only" about it. Allegorical tales can speak deeply about our nature and our relationship with God. Understanding them is part of understanding ourselves and (to the degree possible) God. I have a longstanding interest in the physical sciences--I once thought to go into astronomy/cosmology/physics as a profession--and I have no trouble seeing (for example) the Genesis creation accounts as allegorical but not historical and as the Word of God. That people have long taken it as literal owes more to the state of human knowledge (just try explaining General Relativity to someone who lived 3,000 years ago!) and our tendency to cling to our beliefs even in the face of clear evidence to the contrary. Science and religion are inherently harmonious as both speak to reality, but we have to be open to the fact, and often we aren't.

Anyway, keep on seeking.
