If you have the money and can justify the expense, it's probably best to hire it out. But it is an expense. Like editing, it won't be cheap. The software is less expensive if you do a couple of books a year (and maybe even if you only do one), but there is definitely a learning curve. InDesign does a lot of things and is not entirely intuitive, but you can learn it and it gets easier with practice.
