As for the panties thing, it calls to mind a childhood memory. My younger brother got a construction kit for a present one year. It was called a “girder and panel set.” My mother looked at it, laughed, and — I swear this is true — called it a “girdle and panty set.”

I don’t think that’s where my petunias and pansies came from, but one can never be sure . . .
