As a friend of mine was fond of saying: "Meh."

Every significant technology is (according to somebody) going to usher in either a utopia or a dystopia. Oddly, that never happens. I'm close to retiring from a long career in IT and have on and off had some interest in AI. I obviously don't have your expertise in the field, so I can't make any solid predictions. But I will say that rumors of humanity's demise have been spectacularly exaggerated. Every. Single. Time. Even the Black Plague didn't finish us off. And of course, there have been (as you noted) predictions of AI taking over the world before, none of which have come to pass. Not even close.

So while I wouldn't dare to predict the future of AI (or anything else) myself, I suspect the reality is going to be rather less spectacular than the hype. Just because that's normally how it turns out. It's a sobering fact that in the early days of computers, there were all sorts of predictions about what those newfangled beasties would do for us. But one of their most significant actual applications slipped in under the radar:

Word processing!
